The students did an excellent job at the first Mass of the school year.  Great behavior and attention to our new priest, Fr. Howard.

Don’t forget to sign and return Friday folders!!  This includes the inside sheet AND the behavior sheet with the stars going across.

The magazine sale kicked off this week!  Try to sell as many magazines as you can so we can help our school and possibly get a class party.  Ms. Winsor announced that the address booklets in the packet may be turned in Monday for a prize.  Check the calendar because there are other bonus days to come.

Thanks, parents and students, for getting all of your required school supplies especially since there were some mess ups on the list.  The students are all set and working on staying organized and tidy.  : )

    HOMEWORK:

The students copy their assignments each day and I initial to say that what they have written is correct.  The students should be using the planner to pack each afternoon and check at home to make sure all work is done correctly.  Sometimes I send home a worksheet that is 2 sided to save on paper and copies.  Check the planner for the page numbers.  If there is just one page number, then the student is only required to do that side that night.  If the student does the wrong page or both sides, they will have to miss some of recess for not following directions and/or missing an assignment.  Please feel free as parents to write reminders for your student or send me a message through the planner.  Other than some misunderstandings the first few times, I am very pleased with the students for getting their homework done and back to school.

    Band:

I am very excited to see lots of interested 3rd grade band members.  I wanted to let you and the students know that during band time, the other students and I are working on certain skills.  It won’t be anything that the students need to worry about missing.  Some of it they can go over with us when they get back and some things they do not need to make up.  Sometimes band members will have homework if they missed a handwriting page and couldn’t finish it during the day.  This should not take too long or need much explanation at home.

    Reading Comprehension:

Comprehension homework will start daily next week.  On Mondays and Wednesdays, students will take home a small reader from our textbook series to read and answer questions.  The students take the book home in one of the plastic envelopes purchased.  The answers need to be written in complete sentences either in their Reading folder or on a sheet of paper that goes into the envelope.  This is due back the next day in class.  On Tuesday and Thursday nights, the students will get a worksheet to practice comprehension.

    Spelling Pretests:

Each Thursday, we will take a pretest on all 20 basic words.  NEW this week will be ONE bonus word that follows the same spelling strategy as the basic words, but will not be announced to the students prior to the test.  If a student receives a 100 on the pretest, including the bonus word, they need to get it signed by you and return it to school to not have to take it on Friday.

Handwriting is very important for Spelling tests.  I do not guess or give the benefit of the doubt.  If the letters are not formed correctly and are not legible, the word will be counted wrong.

    In the classroom:

Reading - Rugby and Rosie;  Sept. book report info will be sent home this week

    Language - subjects and predicates

Spelling - Unit 3 long a;  Test Friday

    Math - review graphs

Thanks to all students and parents for a great first full week of school!!!  The students seem to be adjusting well and I am excited to start more subject content next week.

The students took home a Friday folder today.  Please look through their folders each weekend and return on Monday.  The Friday Folder Contents page in the center of the folder needs to be signed and dated.  Please read it before signing.  The student behavior sheet also needs to be signed by the parent and returned on Monday.

Scholastic Book orders were sent home today.  They are due on Friday, Aug. 27 whether you send the paper copy to class or order online.  Each time you order online the class gets $3 to spend on a book.  This year instead of a user name and password, each class has a code.  Our class code is GMTX3.  A whole lot easier to remember!!  : )

I also had the students take home their Homework folder to help practice taking it home each night and for them to empty it out for the next week.

Please have all student textbooks covered by Friday, Aug. 27.  This may be done with the store bought covers or paper.

    In the classroom:

    Reading - sequence and comprehension

    Language - sentences

Spelling - Unit 2;  vowel-consonant-e;  Test Friday;  Words can be found on the Spelling Connections website and the students are allowed to bring home their textbooks to study

    Math - graphs

    Science - plants

    Social Studies - map skills

    Handwriting - reviewing print

    Upcoming Events:

    Welcome to Third Grade!!!

It was a pleasure to meet all of you at Meet the Teacher last night.  Thank you for coming.  I will have the summary of what I talked about posted with the title, “Open House Letter” at the top of this page.

The first day of school was fantastic!  The students did very well and we got to know each other a little more.  I did not send home anything with them today, but if you still have any forms to return, please do so as soon as you can.

    In the classroom:

    Reading - First Day Jitters

    Language - Journal writing

Spelling - start on Unit 1;  Pretest on Thurs, and Practice Test on Friday;  This first week is just for practice, but after that, each test will be on Friday and counted as a grade.

    Math - beginning graphs

    Science - beginning plants

Social Studies - practice map skills

We will start to introduce subjects, but this first week will still include a lot of practicing procedures of the classroom and getting organized.

Monday we will have Prayer Service in Cargill Hall starting at 7:50 am.  Students need to report there first and may not be left without supervision in the school building.  Teachers will be at Prayer and students are not allowed in the classroom without a teacher present.  Prayer is an excellent way to start the day so try to get to school on time each morning.

Our class has Spanish at 8:00 am on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Directly after Prayer Service I walk them to the Spanish room.  Please do not be alarmed if arriving later and do not see us in the normal classroom.

    Upcoming Events:

    Aug. 18 - Early Dismissal @ 2 pm

Sept. 6 - Labor Day holiday

    Have a wonderful weekend!
